The beer is characterized by malty aroma and slight malt sweetness. The malt aroma and flavor may have a dominant toasted character. Hop bitterness is clean and crisp, but not nearly as prominent as a pale ale or an IPA. Noble-type hop aromas and flavors should be low or mild. Fruity esters, diacetyl, and chill haze should not be perceived.
The Vienna style is a relatively new style of beer. When we say “relative”, we are referring to the span of time since beer was first produced by humans. This style was originally brewed by Anton Dreher, at the Klein-Schwechat Brewery in Vienna, Austria, in 1841. That makes it just over 160 years old, which is young when you consider that beer has been around for thousands of years. |
