A classic German Pilsener is very light straw or golden in color and well hopped. Hop bitterness is high, but not nearly that of an IPA or a pale ale. They are brewed using Noble hops such has Saaz, Hallertauer, Hallertauer Mittelfrüh, Tettnanger, Styrian Goldings, Spalt, Perle, and Hersbrucker. Noble-type hop aroma and flavor are moderate and quite obvious. It is a medium-bodied beer, but a malty residual sweetness can be perceived in aroma and flavor. Its head should be dense and rich.
Pilsener is one of the most popular styles of lager beers in Germany, and in many other countries. It’s often spelled as "Pilsner", and often times abbreviated, or spoken in slang, as "Pils." |
