In Germany, a pale, Dortmund style bottom-fermented beer, bigger bodied than a Pilsner and less dry, but not as sweet as a Munich pale beer. At 5.25-5.5 by volume, stronger than either. Elsewhere, the term "export" usually indicates a premium beer.
Sometimes referred to as Dortmunder, it has medium hop bitterness. Hop flavor and aroma are perceptible but low. Sweet malt flavor can be low and should not be caramel-like. The color of this style is straw to deep golden. The body will be medium bodied. Fruity esters, chill haze, and diacetyl should not be perceived.
Made popular in the 19th century in Dortmunder, Germany, these pale golden lagers exhibit a classic clean character with notes of biscuit malts. Bitterness is akin to a German Pilsner with an aromatic aroma. Mouthfeel is firm and even, with an overall dry tone.
