Sometimes when I reflect
back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then I look into
the empty glass and think about all the workers in the breweries
and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer,
they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered.
Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this beer and
let their dreams come true than to be selfish and worry about

Trever Knows Beer!
You Smarter Longer!
In our August issue of OFF
The Wall, we explained how the British Medical Journal published
an article showing that beer helps prevent heart disease. Now
it seems that the head shrinks are taking it a step further.
The British Journal of Psychiatry
has recently published an article that explains how moderate beer
consumption helps prevent senility, keeping you from losing your
mind as you age! A fun and tasty way to prevent senility? For
crying out loud, can it get any better than this???
next thing you know, they'll tell us that pepperoni pizzas lower

~ New This
This month we have added two
new beers to our inventory that we are sure you will love.
Beer - which you've
already read all about so we won't waste any time rambling about
its taste or the color of this beer, or the fact that it's brewed
with real pumpkin...
- Blue Heron Pale Ale
- from the Mendocino Brewing Company in Hopland. Although we think
that most of these guys beers have become a bit watered down over
the years, this ale has surely kept its flavor and possibly improved
over the years!
Bunch of the Month Club
Heron Pale Ale - Mendocino Brewing Co.
The Mendocino Brewing Company
claims honors as the very first microbrewery in California! Established
in 1982, it is located in Hopland right on Highway 101, about 2
hours north of San Francisco.
The brewpub has a very rustic,
woody interior and a pleasant, covered beer garden around back which
makes for some very peaceful afternoon pints of brew! Last time
we were there, the patio cover was being taken over by hop vines.
The brewery began as a small
brewpub and steadily grew with each year's production consistently
outpacing the last. In 1997 they merged with a brewing powerhouse
and now own the Ten Springs Brewing Co. in NY where they brew their
popular Red Tail and Peregrine Ales for distribution on the East
Coast. Some of our customers have told us that they think the beers
bottled on the West Coast are superior. a rumor we can't confirm
since we have never had the opportunity to sample the East Coast
Blue Heron Pale Ale
- Over the years, it seems that the Mendocino brews have become
a bit, well commercialized, targeting mass beer drinkers who don't
want the unusual. We think Blue Heron is still a very good Pale
Ale enjoyable by the masses and beer connoisseurs alike. Tell us
what you think.
Ale - Buffalo Bill's Brewing Company
Buffalo Bill's Brewing Company
is a very small brewpub located in Hayward, California. They started
operations in 1983 and make such notable ales as "Alimony Ale" -
which they call the bitterest beer in America, and "Tasmanian Devil."
They also make a locally famous beer, the famed "Pumpkin Ale" which
is brewed with real pumpkin.
If you visit the brewery in
Hayward, you'll find that you can get beer on tap, in kegs, and
in take out growlers. but not in 12 or 22 oz bottles. That's because
they don't bottle anything there except their growlers (1.5 liter
jugs) for takeout.
So why is the Pumpkin Ale in
12 oz bottles? Well, Buffalo Bill's worked a deal with Portland
Brewing Co. (a very fine brewery indeed) to produce and bottle their
recipe for them this holiday season. We felt compelled to bring
this to you in celebration of the upcoming Halloween and Thanksgiving
Pumpkin Ale is a spicy
ale that has real live pumpkin brewed right into it! Some people
say that the spices are a bit overpowering and others can't wait
for the next sip. I guess its one of those beers that you either
love or you hate! Since the whole idea behind our Bunch of the Month
Club is to give you beers that you otherwise might not try... guess
what you get to try this month!
Brown - Lost Coast Brewing Company
Eureka is a cool little town
way up in Northern California, an area home to several very good
microbreweries including the Lost Coast Brewing Co. which got started
in 1986. As far as we know, it is the only brewery in California
owned by two women - Barbara & Wendy.
Located in a very old building
in downtown Eureka, the brewpub has a comfortable, funky feeling
about it complete with a really cool bar and fast & friendly restaurant.
Both the beer food served there are superb - I would recommend the
Fish & Chips - and don't forget the malted vinegar!
A look around their restaurant
as well as their peculiar beer labels will give you strange Picasso
flashbacks. The artist, we understand, is pretty well known around
Eureka, as evidenced by several of his wall murals around town.
The new, main brewery where
most of the brewing & bottling is done, is located about 10 minutes
away. Get directions at the brewpub - tours are free - tell them
BEER On The Wall sent you ~ You might get some free beer... then
again, you might get kicked out on your butt!
Downtown Brown - Is
a smooth, medium bodied nut-brown ale, that Barbara tells us was
brewed to be enjoyed with any food. We put this beer to the test
and tried it with several dishes including meat, pasta and fish
plates. It passed all our tests, but personally I like their Pale
Ale with Fish & Chips. Take a bottle to the dinner table tonight
and you be the judge!
- Consumption of alcohol may lead you to believe that ex-lovers
are really dying for you to call them at 4 o'clock in the morning...
