July Is
American Beer Month!
|
|
In case you haven't heard,
the beer Gods have determined that this July will be the First
Annual American Beer Month! If you love beer and appreciate
all that it stands for, you will drink ONLY American made
beer for the entire month of July. Even if this means sucking
down swill like Bud or Coors. at least they are American made
beers and you will be doing your part to support our great
beer drinking country (of course we do not recommend drinking
swill in any case).
Don't misunderstand me,
we at BEER On The Wall love good imported beer as much as
the next guy, but we are also aware that there are plenty
of great American beers out there as well - many of them styled
after those great imports we're so fond of! With this in mind,
we have circulated a new employee directive that would mandate
the immediate firing of any employee caught drinking an import
this month! Harsh? We don't think so.
Our forefathers sacrificed
uncounted hours, weeks, years slaving over steaming brew kettles
for the sole purpose of bringing great, new beers to you and
all the American people. Please don't let their blood, sweat
and tears be lost in vain. Drink right! Drink American in
July!

Coast
Range Pale Ale - Coast Range Brewing Co.
|
|
The Coast Range Brewing Co.
is located in the "Garlic Capital of the World" Gilroy. They brewed
their first batch of beer in 1995 and have been family run ever
since, with the main man, Ron Erskine at the helm.
Coast Range's beer is brewed
in a steam-fired, 20 barrel brewhouse (that's about 1220 gallons
per brew), the brewery has four 40 barrel fermenters and one 80
barrel fermenter. They sell their beer on draft and in bottles at
several locations in Central California but it is pretty hard to
find.
Master Brewer, Peter Licht
brews Coast Range's two flagship ales, California Blonde and Coast
Range Pale Ale, both of which are award winning beers!
Coast Range Pale Ale's
deep amber color and rich malt body come from their domestic 2-row
malt and four of the finest British pale and crystal malts. A generous
amount of Pacific Northwest hops supply a well balanced bitterness
and fragrant floral bouquet. A proprietary yeast provides a fresh
fruity aroma and a clean satisfying finish. Coast Range Pale Ale
won a Silver certificate and a 3rd Place Ribbon at the California
State Fair in 1995 and 1997. It also won a Silver Medal in the 1998
World Beer Championships and a Bronze in the 1997 World Beer Championships.

Amber
Ale - SLO Brewing Company
|
|
SLO Brewing Company was founded
in 1988 by President, Michael Hoffman as a charming brewpub in San
Luis Obispo. In 1998 SLO Brewing Co. expanded and opened a state-of-the-art
35,000 barrel capacity 15,000 sq. ft brewery in Paso Robles, California.
That facility is now running strong and even brewing several contract
brews.
You can still get a tasty meal
and a fabulous beer at original brewpub in downtown San Luis Obispo,
but don't be surprised if the draft beers there taste a bit different
than the bottled stuff. The brewpub makes all unique beers and a
bunch of seasonal and specialty brews. When no one is looking, SLO's
new brewmaster, Matthew Brynildson, and his crew sneak over there
and use the 10 bbl system as their playground to try out new recipes.
Amber Ale
(originally Garden Alley Amber) won a Gold Medal in April at
the 2000 International World Beer Cup held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
They call this beer the 'Jewel of the Coast.' It has a deep ruby
color, is full of flavor, not too rich and has a noticeable hop
fragrance. After the initial smooth swallowing, you will enjoy a
nice, light hoppy finish that doesn't last too long. This beer has
won numerous medals and awards since 1995!

Grizzly
Brown Ale - Snowshoe Brewing Company
|
|
Snowshoe brewing Company has
two beautiful locations in the foothills of the gold-filled Sierra
Nevada Mountains: The original brewery and brewpub is in Arnold
and the newer addition is in Sonora.
The brewery was founded in
1995 by Jeff Yarnell and Al O'Brien to salute the pioneering spirit
of John "Snowshoe" Thompson. Snowshoe Thompson was well know for
his faithful delivery of the mail to California gold camps during
the famous Gold Rush era in the mid 1800's. He would hand-carry
mail over the Sierras in the dead of winter using homemade, long
cross-country skis called snowshoes at that time.
In 1998 the Sonora brewpub
opened in a renovated 1920's lumber co. office building originally
designed by the same architect who designed Ghirardelli Square in
San Francisco. The bottling and much of the beer is brewed in Arnold
using a 15 bbl brewhouse, three 15 bbl fermenters and three 30 bbl
fermenters. The Sonora location has its own 15 bbl system in which
it brews the beers sold at its restaurant.
Grizzly Brown Ale
is brewed with five different malts giving it a rich roasted flavor
and a smooth chocolate finish. This beer is definitely the locals
favorite. Every time we visit one of the breweries it seems the
bar tenders are more busy filling growlers one after another than
pouring pints.
