Okay. So you want to learn more about Pale Ales before you get started … that’s cool! Here’s what you can expect, in general, from ANY American Pale Ale.
Aroma: Typically, American Pale Ales have a moderately strong hop smell from the dry hopping and/or the addition of American hop varieties used while brewing. A citrus aroma is usually present, this comes from the type of hops used in a Pale Ale. There is a low to moderate maltiness that nicely balances the hop influence and will sometimes offer a little bit of specialty malt character like bread, toastiness or biscuit-like aromas.
Appearance: Pale Ales are most often a light golden to deep amber color with a big and fluffy white to off-white head that likes to linger. Pale Ales are quite clear unless they are dry-hopped in which case they may be just slightly hazy.
Flavor: And the flavor? Fantastic! Pale Ales usually have a moderately high hop flavor with lingering citrus, very refreshing. The malt character supports the hoppiness in this beer; the balance is usually towards more bitter hops, but often the malt sweetness can be quite substantial.
Mouthfeel: Pale Ales have a medium body and carbonation is moderate to high. Over all, the finish of this style beer is clean and smooth.
Overall Impression: Awesome! Pale Ales are refreshing and hoppy, with just enough sweet malt.
