1554 Enlightened Black Ale is a great English Ale from the New Belgium Brewing Company.
If you haven't tried Enlightened Black yet ... do it now before it's sold out!
New Belgium 1554 is in our online beer store waiting for you right now.
Although it may look like a Stout, or a Porter, 1554 Enlightened Black Ale has very little in common with either of these beer categories. This beer is fermented at relatively high temperatures using a European lager yeast that releases a refreshing and zesty acidity. The chocolate and coffee flavors that are strong in this Ale soon move over to make room for a surprisingly clean finish. Amazing!
Again, if you haven’t experienced New Belgium's 1554 you really should; it’s a fantastic dark beer. And out of sheer respect for it’s creators, the New Belgium Brewing Company, you just have to, because this beer took some effort to bring forth.
Check out this story …
In 1997 there was a flood in the library of the New Belgium Brewery where the ancient script of the coveted secret recipe to this phenomenal brew was kept. The flood destroyed the papers and so began the daunting task of recreating the recipe. To keep the 500 year old beer alive, New Belgium brew masters and researchers traveled to Belgium to decipher old notes and antiquated units of measure in an attempt to bring back to life a delicious recipe that was seemingly lost forever.
And after many months of brewing and tasting (someone had to do it!) the recipe was reborn! The resurrected beer was named 1554 Enlightened Black Ale. We raise our beer glasses in celebration of the New Belgium staff that dedicates their time and shows reverence to the past brewers who created the original Black Ale that we can now continue to enjoy. Thanks New Belgium Brewing, you guys are dedicated and awesome!
